Common mistakes motorists make after car accidents

On Behalf of | Aug 11, 2020 | Car Accidents |

After another motorist collides with you, you are more likely to feel flustered than composed. Barring serious injury, though, you will want to do your best to keep your wits. Saying or doing the wrong thing could complicate the collision’s aftermath. By knowing what mistakes motorists often make after an accident, you can avoid them yourself.

Apologizing to other motorists

After an accident, many faultless motorists have made the error of apologizing to the at-fault driver. Offering an apology may seem like good manners to you. But doing so could make you appear responsible for the crash. Once police arrive at the scene, the other driver may mention your apology to them. The officers will then include it in their report and may consider you the at-fault driver.

Failing to call the police

If your accident was minor, you may wonder whether you should contact the police. Yet, even fender benders can cause injuries and vehicle damage. Calling the police, then, offers you added protection. Upon their arrival, the police will document and investigate the accident scene. They will then fill out a police report, which will be helpful when making your insurance claim. If you experienced injury, officers will make sure you receive the treatment you need right away.

Waiting to make a claim

New York’s statute of limitations requires you to file an auto insurance claim soon after your accident. Whether your claim stems from injuries you incurred or damage to your vehicle, you have 30 days after the date of your collision to make it. Missing this deadline will likely lead your insurance provider to reject your claim. The exception to this rule is if you have valid reason for its delay.

No matter how major or minor your auto accident is, knowing how to protect yourself will keep you from making common mistakes. By avoiding these errors, you will ease your road to recovery.
