New York City Personal Injury Lawyers Explain Catastrophic Heart Injury After a Queens Car Accident

One of the most important organs in your body is your heart.  This pumps oxygenated blood throughout your body to sustain you other organs, muscles, and tissues.  The heart is protected through thick muscles, cushioning connective tissue, and a strong boney cage of ribs.  Although it is well-protected, unfortunately a heart is not invulnerable to damage.  This is particularly true in a Queens car accident or NYC trucking wreck.  The sheer force of a motor vehicle could result in catastrophic damage to a person, including causing a serious heart injury.  Our New York City personal injury lawyers know how devastating a heart injury after a Queens car accident can be, and we work hard to protect the rights of you and your family after the negligence of another person.

At Cohen and Cohen Law Group, P.C., our experienced New York personal injury lawyers have dedicated their careers to protecting the rights of victims injured in a personal injury accident.  This particularly includes Queens car accidents and trucking wrecks.  Victims who are seriously injured due to another’s negligence need to have the proper representation to ensure that their rights to compensation are protected under the law.  This includes protecting rights to compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages, lost future earnings, medical bills, loss of consortium, property damage, and other types of compensatory damages that a victim may be entitled to under New York law.  Call our Queens law office for a FREE consultation to learn how we can help you today.

Common Types of Heart Injuries After a Motor Vehicle Accident

There are many different types of heart injuries after a motor vehicle accident which could result in serious personal injuries, disabling conditions, and wrongful death.  Some of the most common types of heart injuries include the following:

  • Cardiac Rupture – When the force of an impact causes the heart to rupture, it means there is a leak in the heart.  Most ruptures are large and uncontrollable which means death could result very quickly and agonizingly.  However, there are times where there could be a small leak.  With quick medical care and treatment, including emergency surgery, a victim may survive.
  • Aortic Rupture – The aorta is the many branch that supplies blood out of the heart to other parts of the body.  If this aorta tears, blood pumps out of the heart and into the chest cavity—not into the rest of the body.  This results in a very fast and very painful death.  High speed impacts suffer this type of heart damage.
  • Heart contusion – This is a bruise or bump to the heart do to an impact.  This can cause extreme chest pain and discomfort.  All contusions should be checked out by a healthcare professional to ensure there is not a leak, compromising damage, or other troubling issue.  This includes if a contusion is causing swelling to a part of the heart or an area around the heart.  A heart contusion could result in no prolonged damage, or it can result in permanent disability.  Only a healthcare provider can evaluate and decide this after imaging, so always be treated.
  • Aortic dissections – This is another very serious condition that is not always immediately fatal.  This occurs when there is a tear in the lining of the aorta, but the tear is not completely through it.  Blood can pool into the lining of the aorta which results in some troubling symptoms such as numbness on one side of the body but not the other.  This needs to be evaluated quickly by a healthcare provider.  Symptoms need to be taken seriously too.  The longer that there is a delay in treatment and correction, the more likely that the aorta could rupture.
  • A-fib – A heavy motor vehicle accident could cause A-Fib which means that the electronic beat and sync of the heart is thrown off.  This is not usually fatal, but it can absolutely lead to other conditions that are fatal.  This is because the heart may not be able to work as efficiently as normal.  This means that it has to beat harder and faster for longer.  This can lead to heart failure or burnout.  A-fib can easily be managed with medication and some procedure intervention, but not always.
